The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first ever to feature 48 teams, up from 32 at previous tournaments. Co-hosted by the United States (11 venues), Canada (2 venues), and Mexico (3 venues), it will be the largest World Cup in history by number of teams, matches, and venues. The group stage introduces 12 groups of 4, with the top 2 teams from each group plus the 8 best third-place finishers (32 teams total) advancing to the knockout Round of 32.
The tournament runs June 11 to July 19, 2026. The opening match is played at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City — the same venue that hosted the famous 1970 and 1986 World Cup finals. The final on July 19 takes place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the largest stadium in the USA by capacity.
